High Bioavailability
The bioavailability of calcium refers to the provision of elemental calcium obtained from the different calcium salts, i.e. the amount of calcium that is actually used by the body. According to information provided by WHO (World Health Organization), the bioavailability of calcium citrate is 51 mg (milligrams of elemental calcium per gram of calcium citrate ingested), while that of calcium carbonate is 12 mg and that of calcium phosphate is 20 mg. In practical terms, when comparing calcium citrate with calcium carbonate, four times less calcium citrate than calcium carbonate is needed to obtain the same amount of elemental calcium. With regard to calcium phosphate, two times less calcium citrate is needed.
